Applescotch Dessert

1 1/4 cup brown sugar
1 Tbs. cornstarch
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 cup butter
2 cup flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
2 cup cold water
1 Tbs. baking powder
1/3 cup shortening
3 cup peeled tart apples-chopped
3/4 cup milk
1 Tbs sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Mix brown sugar, cornstarch and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Add 2 cups water, cook until bubbly. Cook and stir 2 minutes more, add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 2 tablespoons butter. Pour into 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish. Combine flour, the 1/4 cup sugar, baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt; cut in shortening. Stir in apple, stir in milk and remaining vanilla until moistened. Drop by tablespoons over syrup. Combine 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle on top and dot with butter. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes. Serves 10.
